Everything you might ask
The basics
- What is Small Years?
A private photo timeline of your children, for the people who love them. You swipe through a stretch of your photo library and keep the good ones with one tap, say a line about each if you want, and the family you invite get them in their inbox.
- Who is it for?
Parents with thousands of photos on their phone who mean to share them and never do. And the grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends who’d love to see more of them.
- How is it different from a shared album or the family group chat?
You share a handful, not a dump. Every photo carries a caption in your own words, sits on a timeline that shows your child’s age each month, and turns into memories over the years. Family get a calm weekly email instead of a stream of notifications, and nothing gets lost in a chat.
- What does it cost?
Free for your first 5 GB. Plus gives your family 100 GB for $4 a month billed yearly ($48), or $6 month to month. Family members never pay to view.
- What do I need?
An iPhone with your photos on it. Small Years is an iPhone app for parents. Family view it on the web in any browser, so there’s nothing for them to download.
- Is there an Android app?
Not yet, but it’s coming soon. Small Years is iPhone only for parents for now. Family on Android can view everything on the web.
- Who makes Small Years?
A small team in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, led by our founder, Giles. We’re parents, and we built the thing we wished existed.
Sharing photos
- How do I add photos?
Pick a stretch of your library: the last week, the last month, or since a date. Flick up to keep a photo, down to let it go. Kept photos go to your timeline. You can also add a single photo or clip any time.
- Does Small Years go through my photo library on its own?
No. You choose every photo. Nothing is uploaded until you keep it, and nothing is looked at in the background. The app does count how many new photos are waiting since your last review so it can remind you, but it never opens them.
- How long does it take?
A few minutes, whenever you sit down to it. Your first review starts with your newest 30 photos, and each review after that picks up where the last one ended.
- How do captions work?
Tap the mic and say what happened, or type it, or leave it blank. We tidy your words, fixing punctuation and dropping the ums. We never write a caption for you or add anything you didn’t say.
- Does AI look at my photos?
No. AI only ever sees the words you spoke or typed, to tidy them. No photo is ever sent to an AI model.
- Can I add videos?
Yes. On Free, clips can be up to 30 seconds; on Plus, up to 5 minutes. A longer clip can be trimmed before you post it.
- Can I have more than one child on a timeline?
Yes. Add each child, tag who’s in a photo, and family can filter the timeline by child. Each child’s age shows month by month.
- How does tagging work?
You tag faces yourself. As you go, your phone learns who’s who and suggests names, and once it’s sure it names someone for you, marked so you can see it and change it. All of the face matching happens on your phone.
- Can I include our pets?
Yes. Pets can be tagged like anyone else, and they show up in the family digest too.
- Can I mark milestones?
Yes. Add a milestone to any photo in your own words, like “first steps” or “first day of school”. Your timeline gathers them into a milestones page.
- Can other people add photos?
Yes. Invite a partner, nanny or grandparent as a contributor and they can send photos in. You can choose to approve each one before it appears.
- Can my partner help run the timeline?
Yes. Make them a co-owner. They can post, tag, invite family and manage the timeline with you.
- Can I post from my computer?
You can upload photos on the web too, but the quickest way, swiping through your library, is in the iPhone app.
Inviting family
- How do I invite someone?
From Family in the app, add their name and what they can do, and you’ll get a private link. Send it however you like: a text, WhatsApp, an email. If they’re sitting with you, show them a QR code instead.
- How long does an invite link last?
An invite link works once and lasts 3 days. A QR code lasts 1 hour. If one runs out, they can ask you for a new one from the page, and you can send it in a tap.
- What if the link reaches the wrong person?
You’re told the moment someone joins with your link, and you can remove them right away. If the wrong person opens it first, they can tap “Not Rose?” to cancel the link, and we’ll let you know.
- What can each person do?
Viewers see the timeline, react and comment. Contributors can also send photos in. Co-owners run the timeline with you: post, tag, invite and manage family.
- Is there a limit on how many people I can invite?
Up to 20 people can be on a timeline.
- Can I remove someone?
Yes, any time, from Family. They lose access straight away.
- Can I share a single photo outside the family?
Yes, from the app you can send the photo itself to anyone. There are no public links to your timeline.
For family
- Do I need to download an app?
No. Everything works in your web browser, on a phone, tablet or computer. If you have an iPhone and want the app, you can use that too.
- Do I need a password?
No, never. Open the invite link you were sent, enter your email, and type the 6-digit code we email you. That’s it.
- How do I get back in later?
Go to smallyears.com and sign in with your email. We’ll send a link and a code, and either one works.
- My invite link says it has expired. What now?
Invite links last 3 days. Tap “Let them know” on the page and the person who invited you can send a fresh one.
- I didn’t get the code.
Check your spam or promotions folder, and make sure you typed your email correctly. You can ask for a new code from the same page.
- When will I hear about new photos?
You’ll get a weekly email on Sunday at 7pm your time, and only when there’s something new. You can switch it to daily, or off, from your account.
- Can I react and comment?
Yes. Leave a reaction or a comment on any photo. The parents see it, and so does the rest of the family.
- Can I send in my own photos?
If the parents make you a contributor, yes. Your photos may wait for their approval before they appear.
- I’m in more than one family. How does that work?
One sign-in covers every family you’ve been invited to. Switch between them from the top of the timeline.
- Can I start a timeline for my own children?
Yes. Download the app and start your own with the same account. The family you’re already in isn’t told or changed.
- Can I help pay for the family’s plan?
Yes. Anyone in the family can pay for Plus, as a gift. Paying doesn’t change what you can see or do.
Privacy and safety
- Who can see our photos?
Only the people you invite. There are no public pages, and no links that work for strangers.
- Where does face recognition happen?
On your phone. Face matching runs on the device, and what it learns about faces never leaves it.
- Do you upload my whole camera roll?
No. Only the photos you choose to keep leave your phone. Your camera roll isn’t synced, watched or copied. So a review can pick up where you left off, we keep a private record of what you kept or skipped: a scrambled id and a mark for each photo, never the photo itself.
- Do you share where photos were taken?
No. Location data is removed from the file before it leaves your phone, and family never see exact locations. You can add a place in your own words if you want.
- Do you sell my data or train AI on my photos?
Never. Your photos aren’t shared with advertisers, brokers or partners, and they’re never used to train any model, ours or anyone else’s.
- Is my payment information safe?
Card payments go through Stripe, and App Store purchases through Apple. We never see your full card number.
Plans and billing
- What’s included free?
5 GB of storage for your family’s photos and clips, with clips up to 30 seconds, and everything else: inviting family, digests, comments, memories and milestones.
- What does Plus add?
100 GB of storage and clips up to 5 minutes. It’s $48 a year (that’s $4 a month) or $6 month to month.
- Roughly how many photos fit in 5 GB?
Around a couple of thousand photos, depending on your phone’s camera and how many clips you add.
- Who pays: me or my family?
Either. Plan storage belongs to the family, and anyone on the timeline can pay for Plus. One person pays at a time.
- Can I pay in the app or on the web?
Both. In the app you pay through Apple. On the web you pay by card through Stripe.
- How do I cancel?
Only the person paying can stop. On iPhone, cancel in your Apple subscriptions. On the web, choose “Stop paying” in your account. Plus carries on until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and nothing is deleted.
- What happens when we run out of space?
Everything you’ve posted stays, and family keep seeing it. You won’t be able to add more until you move to Plus or remove some photos.
- Do you offer refunds?
Write to us and we’ll help. App Store purchases are refunded through Apple.
Memories and milestones
- What are memories?
Small Years looks back for you: a month ago, three months, six months, and then on this day in earlier years. It also marks birthdays and, for babies, each month of their life. Memories collect on the Memories shelf.
- Will memories be emailed to the family?
Only if you send one. You choose which memories go to the family, and they’ll get at most one memory email a day.
- Can I see photos by month?
Yes. Switch between the timeline and a calendar, which shows your child’s age for each month.
Your account and your data
- Can I download everything?
Yes. From Account, download your whole library at full resolution, with captions and comments. The download is only available to you, signed in.
- How do I delete my account?
From Account. If you own a timeline, you’ll have 30 days to change your mind, and during that time family can no longer open it. After 30 days every photo, caption and comment is erased, and we email you when it’s done.
- What happens if a family member deletes their account?
Their account goes right away. Anything they posted on your timeline stays, under their name.
- Can I leave a family’s timeline?
Yes. Leave from your account at any time. The parents can always invite you back.
- What do you keep after I delete?
Only purchase receipts, for our accounts: the date, the amount and the payment reference. They hold no name, address, email, card number or photo, and they aren’t linked to you.
- Can I hand the timeline over to someone else?
Yes. An owner can transfer the timeline to a co-owner.
- How do I get help?
Write to us from the About page, or reply to any email we send you. A person reads every message.
